Nina Haste
Nina Haste grew up in Paso Robles, CA and received her undergraduate education here at UCSD, majoring in Chemistry & Biochemistry.  During this time and upon graduation, Nina conducted extensive research in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute laboratory of Susan Taylor, PhD, examining several structure-function relationships in mammalian protein kinases.

Nina is one of the inaugural students of the PharmD/PhD program at the UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.  After completing three years of the PharmD curriculum, she has joined the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program for her dissertations studies.

Nina's research explores a treasure trove of novel natural products derived from marine actinomycete bacteria, such as marinopyrroles and napyradiomycins, for their potential as novel antibiotics against drug-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).  The studies are conducted in close collaboration with William Fenical and Paul Jensen at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and is supported by the NIH and the UCSD/SIO Marine Biotechnology Training Program.
