Eighteen members and friends of the
laboratory experienced a unbelievable 24-hour, 120-mile
roundtrip odyssey to the warm waters offshore of Baja California aboard
the Daiwa Pacific
, owned and operated by our friends Ken and Jayne Baruch. As
always, our captain Ken delivered us to the tuna, a huge school of
bluefin practically boiling out of the water. Total haul on the
journey was 40 bluefin tuna (weighing 30-50 lbs apiece) plus 2 albacore
tuna. Champion
bluefin anglers were "Sweetgrass" Miller (6), Laura Kwinn (5) and
Jacinda
Matherne (3). Sam Courtland took the pot with a 50 pounder.
Everybody landed at least 1 bluefin tuna and hooked and fought
with 2-3 more before snapping the line. Nobody will forget the
sudden disappearance of
most of John Buchanan's tuna when a big shark took a giant bite just as
he tried to haul it out of the water. Our many thanks to Ken and
Jayne and the fantastic crew of Nick, Kenny, Bubba & Ernie who made
the trip so memorable for all, and to legendary sashimi and sushi chef
Aki
Saitoh who brandished the knives at a late night post-party.
