Erin Engelson's farewell from the lab coincided with our annual Baja tuna trip.  Even Momma Liz Engelson traveled down from Washington State to score a big fish and help send her daughter off with style to Ph.D. studies in Biology!  Fortunately for us, Erin is only stepping across Gilman Drive to begin her training in the UCSD Biology Graduate Program.

Twenty members and  friends of the laboratory ventured once again for a 24-hour, 180-mile roundtrip journey to the Outer Banks offshore of Baja on the Daiwa Pacific, led by Captain Ken and Jayne Baruch.  Fish landed on the journey were 33 albacore, 3 yellowfin tuna, 3 dorado (mahi-mahi) and 1 skipjack tuna.  Our ride back to San Diego was treated to a leaping dolphin extravaganza.  This year's jackpot went to Mark Westerman with a ~40 lb yellowfin (pictured below).  The farewell sushi party featured the debut of Aki Saitoh's lovely new bride and sous-sushi chef, Aya!
